Should I get checked for PCOS?
Okay heres my story, I started my period like any normal girl, age 12...It never was regular..By the age 15 I started taking birth control, which being on bc made me have a period every month. Im 20 years old now, got married and stopped taking bc after my last pack in October. I havent had a period yet...no withdrawal bleeding nothing...I have continued having unprotected intercourse, but I took a test 1 week ago, it was neg.. Anyways, Im not overweight, im 5'4 120 pds , no acme,no excessive hair...just the irregular periods..But my sister has pcos..What are your thoughts or opinions on it? Also how much would it cost me to get checked? (texas) Thanks
Well, it is difficult to say in this situation. The first two years of periods can be irregular anyways. And it can take a year or even more after coming off BC for some women to get their periods back. And without any other symptoms, there is nothing here to strongly suggest PCOS.
PCOS isn't a specific disease as such, its a syndrome, so there is no simple test for PCOS. You could get your hormone levels checked out (estrogen, progesterone, LH, FHS and testosterone) which shouldn't cost too much. They might signal if there is a tendency to PCOS. Other tests include ultrasound of your ovaries and a glucose tolerance test with insulin levels (forget fasting insulin or fasting glucose, they are not diagnostic enough). But then you are starting to run up the meter.....
My best advice would be to give it a while longer to see if your periods come back. Maybe after a year of ttc, then its time to find a good doctor.
