Uncovering The Truth About Recent Stereo Amps
When choosing a new amplifier, you most likely will take a glimpse at the technical specifications. An often found spec is the frequency response. This spec although important isn't going to tell the full story with regards to how good the amplifier will sound. I will clarify the meaning of this phrase and even give some recommendations on how to interpret it whilst looking for an amplifier.
An amp will magnify a sound signal that is within the frequency response range. This range is specified by listing 2 frequencies: a lower as well as upper frequency. For instance, the lower frequency might be 20 Hz and the upper frequency 20 kHz. From this spec it seems the amp can function as a HIFI amplifier. You might think the larger the frequency response the higher quality the amp. That, on the other hand, might not always be. You need to look at the specs a lot more carefully in order to adequately interpret them.
A large frequency response doesn't mean the amp has great sound quality. For example an amp with a frequency response between 30 Hz and 15 kHz may sound much better than a different amp having a response between 10 Hz and 30 kHz. Also, every manufacturer, it seems, implements a different way of specifying the lowest and highest frequency of their amplifiers. The most widely used way is to describe the frequency response as the frequency range within which the amp will have rather constant gain having a highest decrease of 3 decibel (dB). Ordinarily the drop in gain is highest at the lower and upper frequency.
Yet, a lot of makers ignore this convention. They push the lower frequency and upper frequency to where the amplifier barely offers any gain. On top of that, these numbers tell absolutely nothing about how linear the amplifier is operating inside this range. Hence it is ideal to have a complete frequency response chart. Such a chart will reveal whether or not there are any sort of major peaks or valleys within the operating frequency range. Peaks and valleys can result in colorization of the audio. Ideally the amplifier ought to have a constant gain within the complete frequency response aside from the drop off at the lower and upper limit. Aside from the frequency response, a phase response chart will also tell a lot in regards to the performance in addition to sound quality of the amplifier.
The circumstances under which the frequency response was measured may also be important to understand. In fact amps may have different frequency responses depending on the speaker which is attached.
This change is most obvious with a lot of digital amplifiers, also known as Class-D amplifiers. Class-D amplifiers use a lowpass filter in their output in order to suppress the switching components that are created through the internal power FETs. The lowpass filter characteristic, however, heavily depends on the connected load.
A few amplifiers incorporate feedback in order to compensate for changes in gain because of different attached loads. A different technique is to provide specific outputs for various speaker impedances which are connected to the amp power stage by using audio transformers.

What amp installation kit for a 600 watt amp?
I,m gonna do the installation of my car stereo myself..I got a 600 watt alpine bridgeable amp...There are lots of amp kits on ebay..Do I need 4,6,or 8 Gage kit for the job?Is it safe to put the amp under the passenger seat?I need to hide the whole system as much as possible,,,The trunk is out because of a fuel cell....
you should get 8 gauge cuz ur amp is under 1000 watts and 8 gauges r made for 1000 watts and under, and yes is safe to put the amp under the seat a longest it fits proper .
