I hired a contractor, after completion no licence, problems with the job but he still demands payment.?
I hired what I thought to be a general construction contractor. He took daily draws on the job. At the end there was a small ballance owed but he went to another job---or so I thought. From jail he sends people to demand payment---more than the agreed price. After a month in jail he shows on my doorstop wanting money and a new bill with a balance a third more than I agreed on. There is problems with the work: electric breaker continually overloads and trips; gas line to new appliances do not have shut off valves; shower is leaking just like it did before the fix. The original estimate was $1500. I have paid him over $2000 and he wants $1100 more. What can I do now?
Contact the local building/licensing authorities.
They will need to inspect the work done.

They will hang his ass.
Then threaten him with a lawsuit and do NOT pay. There is nothing he can do without exposing the fact that was illegally operating an unlicensed business.
You are safe.
Bear in mind that the authorities will now require you to hire someome else and bring everything up to the proper code. More money out of your pocket, but you can always take the jerk to small claims court (that is such a hassle and many times the bad guy gets away)
