Updating all my plugs?
I am changing the style/color of all my plugs and have two left. Both are in the kitchen on either side of the stove. They are on different circuits and both circuit switches are "double" 15 Amp switches. I do not know what is upsteam/downstream from the plugs on their respective circuits.I do not see any test buttons on the circuit breaker switches so I am assuming that they are not GFCI protected.
Can I install regular (15 AMP) GFCI receptacles in each or do I need to install ones with a higher Amperage?
Kitchen are required to have at least 2, 20 amp small appliance GFCI protected branch circuits. There should be GFIC protection either from a circuit breaker or from the first receptacle on the circuit. There can be no lighting on these circuits and they cannot be hidden like behind a fridge. You need to investigate further to find out if there is a GFCI receptacle upstream of the receptacles you are replacing. If your house is old the circuits just might not have any. If these are the first or only receptacle in the kitchen then you can go ahead and install new 15 amp GFCI receptacles. I don't know for sure if the branch circuits need to be updated to 20 amps but you should check. It is based on the type of work you are performing at the time.
