I have a adjustable frequency single phase power source that goes up to 440 volts at 50Hz?

I have a adjustable frequency single phase power source that goes up to 440 volts at 50Hz? I hooked up a variac and got up to 510 volts, but the I need 600 volts. I was thinking about hooking up another variac in series with the first one. Would that work? It won't blow up, will it?

First off, please be warned that what you do is potentially dangerous. When you get to these voltages, you can do a lot of damage.

Now, whether your circuit will hold 600V without going up in flames depends on the ratings of all of the components used, the transformers and the conductors alike, and on the general construction of your apparatus. If you need DC and not necessarily AC, you taks is easier as you can simply rectify the 440V and filter it with a suitable capacitor (again, if it's rated). In that case, you'll get 616V w/o any transformers and all.

PS. It's still better to abstain from danegrous experiments like the one you are planning. I've been doing experiments most of my life and still got a few nasty and dangerous shocks.
